SYNOPSIS
Empress Elisabeth of Austria (Vicky Krieps) is idolized for her beauty and renowned for inspiring fashion trends. By 1877, ‘Sissi’ celebrates her 40th birthday and must fight to maintain her public image by lacing her corset tighter than ever. Elisabeth’s role has been reduced against her wishes to purely performative, her hunger for knowledge and zest for life makes her restless in Vienna. She travels, visiting former lovers and old friends, seeking excitement. She rebels and comes up with a plan to protect her legacy.

Marie Kreutzer

BIOGRAPHY
Marie Kreutzer, born in Graz, is one of Austria's most established filmmakers. Her first feature film, The Fatherless (Die Vaterlosen) (2011), has been shown and awarded at numerous festivals. This was followed by the feature films Gruber Is Leaving (Gruber Geht) (2015), We Used To Be Cool (Was Hat Uns Bloß So Ruiniert) (2016) which were also shown and awarded at festivals. With The Ground Beneath My Feet Feet (Der Boden Unter den Füßen) she was finally able to attract international attention in 2019. The film ran in the competition of the Berlin International Film Festival, received fantastic reviews worldwide and several awards.
